CHALLENGES OF 2005 INTERNATIONAL LANDSCAPE STUDIES EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM

Aim

Landscape Studies is a multidisciplinary subject. Its aim is to support the creation of places that provide stimulating, satisfying, and uplifting experiences, meet socio-economic and functional needs, and sustain and enhance ecological and cultural values based on landscape architecture.  Landscape Studies involves other disciplines such as studies of the environment, ecology, geography, agriculture, forestry, recreation, psychology, social sciences, philosophy, and art. It approaches landscape design from a humanistic point of view, both as a physical environment evolving in constant interplay with humanistic culture and as a living environment and medium of cultural mean. It is a recent modern discipline corresponding with contemporary industrialization, urbanization, and socialization.

Since landscape architecture was established as the first landscape design discipline in the world 100 years ago, landscape education and professional discipline have been developed in Europe, the U.S.A., Australia, and other countries. Organizations of evaluation have been founded, a set of landscape education criteria has been established; and international landscape education organizations have been playing worldwide influential roles.  Meanwhile, the discipline of landscape architecture itself is also developing toward a broader and more multidisciplinary field; that is landscape studies.

In the P.R.C., the contemporary education system of landscape studies has not been fully developed.  However, the demand of the market keeps growing.  There are great challenges and opportunities for innovation in landscape education in this great era of development and change.

This Symposium will provide a platform for worldwide landscape academic practitioners to exchange valuable ideas, to prospect new tendencies; and to share innovation. With all your support, this symposium will be an international landscape festival. We sincerely look forward to your participation and contribution!
